Caring for Goats

Goat Anatomy

Begin by learning the parts of the goat.  Knowing the parts of your goat by name will make it possible for you to care for your goat properly and communicate with others when you need to learn more.  If someone told you about their goat's barrel, would you know what they were talking about?  View larger image

Nutrition and Feeding

One of the most important aspects of raising any animal is understanding its nutritional needs.  Please explore the Goat Dairy Library for a great primer on feeding techniques, nutritional requirements by age, formulating rations and more.

Housing

One of the other most important things to read up on before you bring your first goat home is housing and fencing.  Goats are notorious for escaping so you'll probably have to invest some more time and money in your goat fencing than you have for other livestock you may have.

Here's some information to get you started: New York State 4-H Fact Sheet

Before you bring your first goat home, take some time to visit as many other people you raise goats in your area as possible.  this will give you a chance to see what works well for them (You'll probably also receive a few tips about what NOT to do!)
